My wife, Krissy and I were astounded to come across an article in FoxNews recently citing several research studies connecting obesity rates and religious affiliation. The findings all come to a similar conclusion: the majority of us are fat in church.
A 2006 Purdue University study found that the fundamental Christians are by far the heaviest of all religious groups led by the Baptists with a 30% obesity rate compared with Jews at 1%, Buddhists and Hindus at 0.7%.
A 2011 Northwestern University study tracking 3,433 men and women for 18 years found that young adults who attend church or a bible study once a week are 50% more likely to be obese.
The Pawtucket Heart Health Program found that people who attended church were more likely than non-church members to be 20 percent overweight and have higher cholesterol and blood pressure numbers.
Finally, a 2001 Pulpit and Pew study of 2,500 clergy found that 76% were overweight or obese compare to 61% of the general population at the time of the study.
This information shouldn’t surprise us. Have you ever taken a look around on Sunday mornings in church? What is it that most people do after church? Have a big meal at the local restaurant. We order and eat way too much and then we take a big nap! Sound familiar?
It’s time to wake-up, church!! What does God’s word say to us? Read 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. And 1 Corinthians 10:31. And Romans 12:1-2. We are to have the mindset of Christ. We are called to worship God with our bodies! He knows what’s good for us, doesn’t He? And if He knows what’s good for us, then let’s pay attention to what He is saying and actually start doing it.
Last month, in our chiropractic office, we saw many lives transformed as part of a 30 Day weight loss challenge. People are waking up! People are beginning to see that there is truth and power in what God says. The world tempts us with food and laziness. God challenges us to sacrifice, love and abundant life in Him.
Today, we choose His abundant life. How about you?
